Take a BMW 6 series coupe or convertible and marry it to a huge under-the-hood powerplant, change out some steel body parts to lightweight carbon fiber, load the brakes with super stop components and upgrade a suspension system to match the specs of a racing car and you’ve got the makings of a BMW M6. Available as either a coupe or convertible (cabriolet) body, the 2008 M6 delivers the famous power and style serious drivers have come to expect from this German manufacturer. BMW M6 Refined BrawnEuropean style and refinement aside the BMW M6, particularly the Coupe, has many of the same features of a classic muscle car. The machine sports a wide athletic wheelbase and slightly brawny front and rear ends are typical of a powerful road and track machine. The “shark-nosed” front end is pure sexy strength. These stats often beat in-class competitors, Mercedes CL550 and Porsche Cayman. The Porsche is half the price, but stats indicate much less power and the Mercedes is about even cost-wise though consistently more sluggish in track tests. Drivers take note: M6 controls are either via 7-speed manual gearstick or state-of-the-art SMG on-wheel paddle shifters for close-up dexterity in even the most demanding driving environments. Packing this kind of adrenalin means the suspension and control systems better be a match: again, a harmonious mix of lightweight performance materials with steel. On the turns a combination of all-season traction and variable M differential lock systems kick in to control slide and overall Laws of Physics. Interior M6 LuxuryPart of the problem with super performance cars is interior comfort, but this is where BMW outshines some of its competition: the M6 is super comfortable, not just for the short charge down the track or the thruway, but even long-distance tours. This 2-door sportster seats four and the front Merino leather seats hug the driver’s side and promise a rousing great ride. The interior dash and control panels are finely tooled and loaded with the necessary components, as well as a menu of high end comfort controls: heated steering wheel, navigation system, power seats with 14 adjustments and built-in memory, and 13-speaker surround audio system with iPod compatibility. The 17-mpg (highway) may limit your distance from home, but it will not be a lack of comfort.
