How Do I Change My CDL from Intrastate to Interstate? A Step-by-Step Guide

If you currently hold an intrastate commercial driver’s license and want to expand your driving opportunities, you may be asking, “How do I change my CDL from intrastate to interstate?” The good news is—it’s a straightforward process if you meet the requirements.

Step 1: Get a DOT Medical Card
To qualify for interstate status, you must pass a DOT physical exam. Once you pass, you’ll receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC). This confirms you meet the federal health standards required to drive across state lines.

Step 2: Submit Your Medical Card to the DMV
Once you have the certificate, you need to submit it to your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or licensing agency. Some states allow you to do this online, while others may require an in-person visit.

Step 3: Update Your Self-Certification Status
When changing your CDL type, you’ll also need to update your self-certification. Select “non-excepted interstate” if you plan to operate commercially across state lines and want to remain compliant with DOT regulations.

Step 4: Receive Updated CDL Status
After submitting your documents and updating your self-certification, your license status will change from intrastate to interstate. You may receive a new physical CDL with updated restrictions removed.

Now that you know how to change your CDL from intrastate to interstate, you can unlock better driving opportunities and expand your career on the road.
